Choosing the right notebook: a quick guide
Ruled or blank? Dotted or grid? A simple guide to picking the notebook that fits how you actually write.
With so many sizes, papers and layouts, choosing a notebook can feel like a test in itself. Here is a quick guide to picking the one that fits how you actually write.
Consider the layout
- Ruled — the classic choice for notes, lists and everyday writing.
- Blank — freedom for sketches, mind maps and scrapbook-style journaling.
- Dotted — a quiet grid for bullet journaling, habit trackers and tidy layouts.
- Grid — great for diagrams, tables and anything structured.
Consider the paper
Heavier paper (90gsm and above) handles fountain pens and highlighters with less bleed-through. If you mostly write with ballpoint or pencil, standard 80gsm paper will serve you perfectly well.
Consider the size
A5 fits most bags and desks comfortably; A4 gives pages room to spread. If the notebook lives in a pocket or handbag, an A6 or A7 planner keeps things light.
